eBay Acquires StumbleUpon

May 31st, 2007 · No Comments

stumbleupon-ebayStumbleUpon becomes the next social media service to get snagged today. Businesswire reports on the purchase, which cost $75-million dollars. Early press releases indicate that eBay plans to leave the fast growing social bookmarking service as it is, preferring to keep it in its current form and waiting to see which direction it can grow in the future.

While there are social media services presently bigger and more successful, acquiring StumbleUpon appears to be a smarter business purchase. Their users are more varied and, potentially, more receptive to eBay’s future marketing thrusts than other social media services like Digg or Reddit. They have also gained a lot of positive press over the last couple of years and established a strong brand in the industry. The downloadable toolbar plugin that comes with StumbleUpon is definitely a huge reason for the purchase as it allows eBay prime advertising space for numerous services and products.

Microsoft Surface - Microsoft’s new innovation

May 31st, 2007 · 37 Comments

microsoft surfaceRecently, Microsoft unveiled its latest and greatest innovation. Although at first glance, it is a table with an embedded flat screen, Microsoft Surface is the result of several years of hard work and many brilliant innovations. Surface breaks away from the norm, in that it does not use a mouse or a keyboard. It instead relies on touch sensors, as well as a combination of five cameras beneath the projection screen that can recognize various shapes on the surface and wirelessly connect to them, bringing a whole new meaning to click and drag: the user could physically drag files to a device.

The hardware for a Microsoft Surface is going to be unique, as Microsoft will finally begin making their own, as they sense incredible market potential in this very innovative niche. The CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, has said publicly that this could possibly become a multi-billion dollar industry, with applications ranging from tabletops, to interactive mirrors. It is possible that this will eventually be built into the doors of refrigerators, or embedded into walls, pervading many aspects of everyday life.

Real Estate Mobile Technology

May 29th, 2007 · No Comments

house4cellHouse4Cell is a company that offers estate agents a service which provides details of real estate to people who are interesting in the properties by cell phone texts. So any one driving past a property that catches their eye can text House4Cell with a number found on the real estate sign and receive details about the property straight to their phone. The information sent to buyers includes up to three pictures of the interior of the property. This cell phone service is provided by Cellit Mobile Marketing and it offers real estate agents a simple service for prospective buyers to use to help find their dream property.

It works by potential buyers sending a one word code to a specially set up number. The buyers are then sent back details about the property along with photographs. The buyers’ numbers are forwarded to the estate agent dealing with the property who can then decide to follow up. Buyers can also choose to receive further information about the property via e-mail or fax. This service offered by Cellit Mobile Marketing could work very well. I think more people would contact an estate agent for further details if all they had to do was send a text. After all it takes time to track down the right estate agent responsible for the property.

How Long Do Plasma TVs Last?

May 28th, 2007 · No Comments

In the not so distant past, it was not unusual to have a hard time hearing the volume of a plasma TV over the buzzing of the units cooling fans at work. These cooling fans were functioning regularly as the obsolete plasma TV could produce heat hot enough to cook eggs. It is no wonder that most of the early model plasma TV have already retired.

Many different technologies have been at work to create improvements in today’s technology. These innovations have brought the life spam of a plasma TV to be calculated at 20 to 25 years for normal viewing patterns.

Normally a plasma TV has a half-life between 30,000 to 60,000 hours, meaning that the unit will loose around fifty percent of its brightness during this time of service. For instance if a plasma TV was left on for eight hours a day the expected half life would range about 9 years. If however the plasma TV were left on for only 4 hours daily, then its half life expectancy would range near about eighteen years.
